nnWilliam Rex Jones - Artist Profile Born in Stettler Alberta but moved to the Calgary area as a youngster, I continued living in Calgary most of my life, enjoying the close proximity to the beautiful Rocky Mountains which inspired so many of my paintings. I started sketching at an early age and completed my first oil painting at the age of 18. Over the years I taught myself how to use watercolours, oils, pastels and finally acrylics which I mainly use now. Although I have used canvas for oil paints I switched to using Masonite when I started using acrylics which allows me to incorporate the details into my paintings that I like to achieve. To get the smoothness I need, I cover the surface of the Masonite with many coats of Gesso while sanding between coats. Because I paint using many thin layers of acrylic paint on my paintings it is almost like a glaze to replicate the colours of nature. I like to create a pathway for your eyes to follow through my paintings so you may enjoy the journey. Following the death of my wife in 2001, I retired to the Shuswap region of British Columbia continuing to paint and improve my painting skills and techniques over the next 20 years. Most of my paintings are landscapes but have recently started incorporating animals and birds in my works. I am now living back in Alberta, in the Waiparous area where I continue to paint and produce quality landscape and nature paintings.
